Below, Dr. Joseph Dunnigan, director of OSU Counseling Services, addresses common questions and offers helpful information for students seeking mental health help on campus:

Q: Why is counseling important?

A: Counseling may mean something different to everyone, but at its core, it’s an opportunity to learn more about oneself, seek support and have an opportunity to grow and develop all within a safe environment.

Q: How do I make an appointment with OSU Counseling Services?

A: We have a walk-in clinic Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students can simply come to 315 Student Union, fill out some paperwork and meet with a counselor. If those times do not work, a student can call or stop by our office to schedule an initial appointment. If you are ready to talk to a counselor at OSU, our team is here to guide you through the process.

Q: Is counseling free for OSU students?

A: Our initial appointments and first six sessions are free. After that, there is a cost of $15 per session, but in many cases, these fees can be reduced or waived if cost is a concern. There is no cost for group, workshops or consultation services. Providing accessible campus mental health services is a priority for our office.

Q: Are the counseling sessions confidential?

A: Yes. Services are confidential and designed to provide a secure space for students to discuss personal concerns.

Q: What kinds of issues can I talk about in counseling?

A: Counseling is set up to meet the needs of the student. Whatever it is you need to discuss, we are here to support you. Some common issues include relationship, career, homesickness and anxiety.

Q: What happens during my first counseling appointment?

A: During the first appointment, a counselor will gather information about your concerns and assist you in finding the best fit for your needs. Sometimes, University Counseling Services is not the right place, but we work with students to find other services to meet their needs.

Q: How long is an appointment?

A: A typical session is scheduled for one hour. Initial and walk-in appointments usually take about the same amount of time.

A: Can I get help for stress, anxiety or academic burnout?

A: Yes, these are concerns we address often at University Counseling Services. In addition to working on strategies with a counselor, we can help you get connected to other supportive services on campus.

Q: What if I don’t feel comfortable with my counselor? Can I switch?

A: Yes, we do not always match well with a counselor, and we take steps to make the communication open between a counselor and student so issues can be addressed, but if ultimately you feel this is not a good fit, we will take steps to assist you in finding the right match.

Q: Are counseling sessions in person or online?

A: We offer both in-person and virtual options, including university virtual therapy and telehealth mental health services for those who prefer remote appointments. These flexible options expand access to mental health help on campus and beyond.

Q: What should I do if I’m in crisis or need immediate help?

A: If it is during business hours, you can stop by or call University Counseling Services and speak to a counselor. If it’s after hours, you can contact OSUPD, utilize the TalkNow feature from TimelyCare, contact a provider through CallSAM or use another 24/7 hotline like 988. These resources are available for crisis help for students and urgent student mental health crisis situations.

If it is an emergency, call 911.

The OSU Student Counseling Center is located in room 320 of the Student Union. The center is open from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They offer extended hours Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 .pm.
