Oklahoma State University is a school for many, a home for some and an opportunity for all.

For Callie Conyers, it’s a dream she’s now living.

The senior from Gruver, Texas, didn’t grow up thinking college would be easy — she didn’t even think it would be possible.

“I graduated with about 40 kids, so the thought of even coming to a DI school seemed kind of out of reach for me,” Conyers said.

Yet, she dreamed of more. As a pre-medical student, Conyers knew her path wasn’t going to be paved for her, and she would need to grow outside Gruver’s confines. She would have to dream as big as the large Texas panhandle sky above her hometown.

Still, during her application process, the decision wasn’t about academics or growth; it was about feasibility.

“Looking for scholarships was a big part of how I was going to distinguish which school I wanted to go to,” Conyers said. “Whenever I applied for it, I was really praying and hoping that I would get it, because that’s what was going to help me navigate whether I came to a bigger school or not.”

The scholarship Conyers received through the McKnight Scholars Leadership Program didn’t just open a door for her to attend OSU; it changed the trajectory of her life. It became an integral piece of who she chose to be in her time as a Cowgirl and helped her find the confidence she’d been longing for.

“I wasn’t a very confident person in high school, so coming here and being flooded with so many people wanting to pour back into my life … it was super touching and showed me what it means to live with altruism at the forefront of your mind,” Conyers said.

Conyers is majoring in human nutrition on a pre-medical track, with minors in microbiology and ethical leadership. More recently, she has been accepted into medical school, where she will continue to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.

Over her four years, Conyers has served as a recruitment ambassador, mentor and student director in the McKnight Scholars Leadership Program. She has also worked with alumni and donors through the OSU Foundation and taken on leadership roles within the Hargis Leadership Institute as she focuses on serving others.

“The overwhelming generosity is what made me decide to come to OSU to begin with,” Conyers said. “It’s also a reason why I’ve stayed so heavily involved … because of the kindness that people have shown me to get me here, and wanting to pour back into the cause that they believe in so much.”

Conyers leads with a heart of sincerity and gratitude, taking on each of her responsibilities with honor and integrity.

“I grew up not taking the investment of others and the investment that others have in your life for granted,” she said. “Always use that and use those opportunities to better yourself.”

Conyers has reached personal milestone after milestone, but the people she’s met and interacted with have framed the way she intends to move forward in her career, her relationships and her education. Her opportunities through study abroad programs have given her a broader perspective on the world, on others and on herself — ones she has taken very personally.

“I think studying abroad is definitely one of the most impactful things that the McKnight program has given me outside of the community and leadership training,” Conyers said. “The ability to see a very distinct and unique part of the world … and to see what it looks like to live in the shoes of somebody else for a few weeks, and it’s made me have this much more holistic view of our university.”

Looking back now, Conyers fills her thoughts and actions with gratitude, and she has used the generosity of others as a stepping stone for her to do the same.

“I think inspiring this legacy of giving through everything that we do, whether that’s giving time or money, is the best way that we can say thank you,” Conyers said. “Thinking about how different my life would be if I hadn’t gotten to come here can make me really emotional … I can’t imagine not having the experiences that I’ve had, and it all started and was rooted in having that financial burden lifted because of this program.”

The moments Conyers has had, both on campus and across the world, have reshaped the dreams she once had — they’re no longer out of reach and closer than she ever could have imagined.

“Words can only do so much for the heart you have behind an experience,” she said. “But the financial support that I’ve gotten from our scholarship programs will always be one of the biggest blessings and greatest gifts I’ve ever had in my life.”
